The group was set up in 2023 by John Bell, the library assistant at the Slamannan Library (now retired) and Caroline Marshall. It was the first gardening group organised within the Falkirk libraries.
Membership is open to anyone interested in gardening. The group meets every other Thursday at 5pm in Slamannan Library to share advice and swap plants from our gardens over a cuppa and some biscuits, and occasionally some home baking. 🍰While we’re a local group, with members living within a mile or so of the library, we are an international community of garden-lovers. Members hail from Scotland, England, the USA, Spain, Germany and South Africa and Iran.
Since planting in the new village park, we’ve been busy making plans and getting organised! We’ve set up our Facebook page and are inviting the community to join the group and to help us to take care of our park. 🌼🌳
We’ve also been working hard to make other areas of the village ‘greener’. For example, the group has installed planters with wildlife-friendly flowers in front of the local shops that will help support and promote biodiversity. We have plans to plant up a new space in the village, in which we will grow a similar mixture of herbaceous perennials, which will come back every year. In addition, we’ll be helping make the outside area at the local primary school a fun place for play and to grow plants! Garden club members will be helping the kids to sow and grow vegetables.
…and we’re just getting started! We hope to grow our plans - along with our plants! Some ideas that we’re sowing just now include: having community planting days; a community vegetable garden with a polytunnel and compost area; and social get-togethers to plant together and to share seeds, plants, advice and community spirit. And cake! 🍰🍪
Now that the new park is open, we’ll be regularly weeding, watering and caretaking the two borders in the park, and just spending time in it enjoying the flowers and their visitors!
